You can come across balls of meat in almost every culture. They add the last touch to a bowl of Italian spaghetti and make a visit to the Swedish store IKEA even better. But have you ever heard of a meatball made out of artificial meat, powder or even bugs? Hearing this you might shiver a little. Doesn’t sound very tasty, does it? Nonetheless there is a chance that we will be eating those in the near future.

What is it?

Tomorrow Meatball is a project set up by IKEA’s design lab Space10. The Swedish meatballs have become the store’s trade mark, but as a team they wondered what this product would look like in about 20 years’ time. Space 10 is a big community with members all over the world. They bring together all their different specialties in the projects that they do. For ‘Tomorrow’s Meatball’ a combination was made of scientific research and food design. Based on mega trends that will effect our eating habits, like global changes and a fast growing population, 8 meatballs were designed. Together they make a menu. Each of them shows a different future scenario.

Why is it cool?

The increasing demand for food and the consequences of meat-eating are becoming a problem. As we speak the earth is slightly warming up and good food is thrown away. Food waste, global warming and a growing population are already effecting our world. We may not really notice it right yet, but things will only get worse if we don’t take action.

Data about this problem are accessible for everyone, but they don’t make a great impact. In the year of 2050 we will need to produce 70% more food to feed the world population, but that’s just a number. Research states that we take in images 60.000 times faster than we take in text! Now that’s the reason why this campaign could mean so much. If people see this weird meatballs they will immediately understand the consequences of global issues for them Hopefully it will not only scare them, but also make them change their behaviour for the better.

We are informed about global problems everyday, through different media, but Tomorrow Meatball make us truly understand this information. It makes confusing numbers transparent by visualising. I’m not sure about you, but if I look at these images I already miss ‘real’ balls of meat…

What sources did I use?

Always wonder,

Simone
