Yes I...Ikea

Time for a romantic subject; marriage. A day that’s all about a loving couple surrounded by their friends and family, throwing rose petals, congratulating each other with strong handshakes and stuffing themselves with delicious smelling foods. Although that’s what a traditional wedding looks like, but IKEA gives you a different option. A few months ago the Swedish furniture chain started a service called ‘ The IKEA Wedding Online’ which gives lovers the chance to say ‘ Yes I do’ via Webcam. I don’t know about you, but to me that does sound not as romantic.

What is it? ‘The IKEA Wedding Online’ is a website that helps you to plan an online wedding in just a few seconds. While organizing a real life wedding takes a lot of scheduling, this way your special day is planned before you know it. As curious as I can be from time to time, I signed up with my Facebook account. After that I got all kinds of options for different locations like the forest, the circus, the beach or even on a boat. While at this point it still feels like a children's game, it gets more serious the next page. You have to choose a celebrant. Next step is conforming a date and time for the wedding to take place but that’s no longer possible. I can not go on from this.
When it was still working you could invite gasts and witnesses via Facebook and lastly complete and send your invitation.
There are several videos on the internet that show you an example of such an online wedding. It’s basically a livestream at a chosen location with people joining the experience via their webcam. IKEA even made it possible for Swedish citizen to marry legally this way, by providing the proper paperwork.

Why is it cool? This service makes it possible for a traditional happening as marriage to take place on the internet. That’s something I have never heard or thought about before. It even scares me a little. It’s a fact that the internet has changed social connection. Nowadays people from all over the world can communicate via the web and with ‘The IKEA Wedding Online’ they should even be able to attend each others weddings without having to travel. Therefore it could have great potential for the future but I can’t help myself from asking if we should want all of this to be possible. Isn’t your wedding day less memorable if it’s so easy to plan? Shouldn’t we all be in the same room to really feel the love and connection those two people have? The romantic in me screams for those real life slicing-the-cake-moments.
I would link ‘The IKEA Wedding Online’ with the trend Togetherness&Inline because its shows how the internet more and more takes over social connection. Even a marriage can take place in the digital world. Also, with this service your international friends are able to attend your wedding because they don’t even have to leave their houses.
