Donald Trump

As you probably are aware of, November 8th America will appoint a new president. In every state citizen can vote for their favourite candidate. At this very moment changes are that the main battle will be between Donald Trump (Republican Party) and Hillary Clinton (Democratic Party). Even in the Netherlands, not a single day goes by without a small video-fragment on a television-show or an article in the paper. The presidential elections are a hot item! Nonetheless, only one candidate can be the centre of attention. With his āquite extraordinaryā haircut and his extreme statements Donald Trump steals the show.
What is it?
A bit of weird question you might be thinking? We are talking about a person, not a thing, right? Well, actually I did not write this blogpost to talk about Donald himself. Far more interesting I find the different reactions to his whole image. To give you some background information I have listed some of his statements:
Create more jobs and let people pay lower taxes.
Earn back the United Statesā honour by reinforcing the army
Securing the borders to stop (mostly Mexican) immigrants from entering the United States
More Americans should carry a weapon with them
Another important thing to know about him is the fact that he made multiple disrespecting comments about women. He compared females with pigs and called them out for sluts.

The artist Sarah Levy was sick of his sexist comments when it came to women. Therefore, she decided to paint a portrait of Donaldās face with her own period-blood. To take her protest to an even higher level, she sold the painting. The money was donated to an organisation that takes care of Mexican immigrants in the United States.
Saint Hoax, a Syrian artist came up with the idea of #BlowUpTrump. Yes, it is exactly what you expect it to be. He designed an inflatable doll that looks just like the president candidate. Saint: āWithout air this doll is just as empty as Donaldās statements are.ā. When you order your own #BlowUpTrump, it comes with a needle āso you can pierce him, when you can't stand him anymoreā.

Why is it cool?
What are these protesting pieces of art coming from? It is no surprise that a remarkable person like Donald Trump has haters as well as fans. The thing that does surprise me is the way in which people seriously attack him in whatever way. Why are some people reacting this furious to his statements? Why do people get so mad about the things he does and say? Why do #BlowUpTrump and the period-blood portrait get so much support, while they are maybe kind of out of line?
The power of transparency
Data have become accessible for the public. When Donald Trump states something that is at least doubtful, you can look it up. This way we can actually check if politicians are telling us the truth. Angie Drobnic Holan, the editor of PolitiFact, tested the facts of presidential candidates and summarized them in an index.

If we must believe this index, every presidential candidate has lied. Out of all the things Donald Trump has said, 76% was false. No wonder people have had enough of it! They no longer accept to be deceived, let alone to be deceived by their potential president! Some people show their dissatisfaction through pieces of art, that then go viral. I interpret these works as a desire for honesty, a world where they arenāt being lied to.
May I suggest a presidential candidate that stands out for telling the truth?
